Frequently Asked Questions

NDIS - National Disability Insurance Scheme

What is NDIS?

The NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It’s Australia’s national scheme for people with disability, under the age of 65, to get the care and support they need to live life to the fullest.

The NDIS is for people with a permanent and significant disability which impacts on their ability to take part in everyday activities.

The NDIS also connects anyone with disability to services in their community. The NDIS now supports over 500,000 Australians with disability to access the services and supports they need.

The NDIA is the National Disability Insurance Agency.

It is a government agency and its role is to implement and manage the NDIS and make sure people with disability continue to get the support they need.

The NDIS is for people with disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. Disabilities may be intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive or psychosocial.

You could be eligible for the NDIS depending on your location, age, residency and disability.

Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few different things such as:

  • Age: You need to be under 65 years at the time of your application
  • Residency: You need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.
  • Early Intervention: You might be eligible if early intervention would substantially improve your functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for you or your child

The NDIS provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life.

There are 3 types of supports:
1. Core budget supports – to assist you with daily living activities
2. Capital budget supports – for investments, like assistive technologies, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, or funding for capital costs (such as paying for specialist disability accommodation)
3. Capacity building budget supports – to help you build your independence and skills.

If you’re eligible – or your child is eligible – you can apply to join the NDIS by:

– call NDIS on 1800 800 110
– filling out the NDIS Access Request Form and email it to NAT@NDIS.gov.au, or
– contacting your closest Local Area Coordinator or NDIS office – you can search for NDIS offices or contacts in your area.

You’ll have a meeting with a planner from the NDIA or a Local Area Coordinator to create your NDIS plan.

To prepare for your planning meeting:

1. Think about your goals and what you would like to achieve in the short-term and longer-term

2. Think about your current supports and who provides them, and what supports and services you may need to pursue your goals

3. Gather any necessary assessments or reports – this helps the NDIA understand the types of supports you need.

Your first NDIS plan is usually reviewed after 12 months.

The NDIS is working on making plans up to 2 years or longer as the norm, based on feedback from participants.

Home Care Package (HCP) /Support At Home (SAH)

What is a Home Care Package?

A Home Care Package (HCP) is a government-subsidised aged care program that provides support to older Australians who wish to remain living safely and independently at home. There are currently four package levels, each offering a different amount of funding based on your care needs.

Support at Home is the new aged care program that will replace Home Care Packages from 1st November 2025. It will expand the current system from 4 levels to 8 levels of support, offering greater flexibility, simplified service delivery, and improved access to care at home.

Both programs cover a wide range of services tailored to your needs, including:

  • Personal care (showering, dressing)

  • Domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry)

  • Meal preparation

  • Transport and social support

  • Allied health services (e.g. physiotherapy, podiatry)

  • Equipment, aids, and home modifications

  • Nursing and clinical care

  • End-of-life Care
  • Restorative Care
  • Transitional Care

To qualify for assessment, you must meet some needs and age requirements. These check:

  • how much assistance you need with some everyday tasks
  • that you are 65 years or older
  • if you have care needs and are either:
